SOUTH FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A Long Island man has been arrested in connection to the death of a young mother who was found strangled inside her home earlier this month.

Michael Owen, 27, is being held on a second-degree murder charge at Nassau County Police headquarters. He’s scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.

The 27-year-old of St. James is accused of strangling 27-year-old Kelly Owen in her South Farmingdale home on Jan. 15.

According to officials, Kelly was scheduled to help at her 6-year-old daughter's after-school program, but she never showed up.

Her parents found her car parked in the driveway of the family's one-story home on First Avenue and then discovered her unconscious and not breathing in her bed.

The medical examiner ruled she had been strangled, and there were no signs of a break-in.

Police say the woman was pregnant at the time of her death. They say she believed the father of the child was her estranged husband, Michael Owen – who was living with another woman at the time of her death.

“Their arguments escalated in regards to the pregnancy, as well as the insurance information,” says Nassau County Police Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick. “On Jan. 15, our investigation determined, Michael went to that house and strangled Kelly, causing her death.”

Authorities say the victim, who was in nursing school, had been asking her estranged husband to put her on his health insurance.

“He did not want this child, he did not want to give her medical insurance (and) he had this new relationship that he was involved in,” Fitzpatrick said.

In court, it was revealed that Michael Owen is a former marine. He was placed in jail without bail.
