NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A carjacking on Long Island set off a police chase that ended in a crash and gunfire in Queens and a suspect dead.

According to reports, officers pursued the suspect in the stolen vehicle across county lines into Cambria Heights, where the vehicle crashed into a hair salon at the corner of 217th Street and Linden Boulevard.

Witnesses said they heard multiple shots and saw police pull the driver out of the car and immediately covered the body with a white sheet.

"We heard a big bang boom; a few shots," nearby resident Laront Josephs said. "But when he pulled him out the door, I seen that they was pulling him immediately to the floor and they came with the sheet and they put the sheet over him, so when they put the sheet over him I already knew he was dead."

It’s unclear why the suspect was shot by officers. The suspect’s identity was not released.

The investigation remains ongoing and residents are told to avoid the area.
