Suspicious Items Found At Trump Tower Deemed Not Dangerous

July 27, 2018 - 6:46 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880/AP) -- Police on Friday evening ruled that some suspicious items found at Trump Tower were not dangerous.

As WCBS 880's Mike Smeltz reported, the NYPD said a maintenance worker spotted a cellphone in a potted plant near the Starbucks on the second floor of Trump Tower Friday afternoon. Officers treated the cellphone and the other items with it with extreme caution, breaking apart the cellphone to see if there was anything suspicious inside.

Even after the area was given the all-clear, officers could still be seen at the second floor Starbucks, searching around tables and chairs for any other items that may be there.

The public only has access to a few floors of Trump Tower.

President Trump is in Washington and was not and is not in Trump Tower. He did not tweet about the incident.

Fifth Avenue was closed at 57th Street on the block in front of the skyscraper during the investigation.
