ELIZABETH, N.J. (WCBS 880) — A 16-year-old boy was killed after colliding with a tow truck while riding an electric scooter in New Jersey.

It happened around 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elizabeth Avenue and South Spring Street, just weeks after 400 Lime scooters hit the streets of Elizabeth.

The victim has been identified as Nelson Gomez.

“This was a tragic accident and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this young man,” Mayor J. Christian Bollwage said in a statement. “The City Council will discuss the parameters of its relationship with Lime.”

Police say the tow truck stayed at the scene and no charges have been filed.

Police are urging e-scooter riders to operate them safely and obey traffic rules.

CBS2 reports Lime’s user agreement requires all riders be at least 18.

Lime said it is devastated and is in close contact with the city ready to assist in any way that it can.
