Some Cheer As 'Trump Place' Name Comes Down From UWS High-Rise

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- When the Trump Place building went up, the Trump name might have been associated with aspirational luxury – but now it means something completely different.

Thus, as WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported Thursday, the Trump name is no more on the Upper West Side high-rise.

Using a hammer and screwdriver, two workers and a bucket truck removed the letters spelling out “Trump Place” from the Riverside Boulevard building. Owners decided they did not want the Trump name on the front of their home.

One man cheered as the Trump name was removed from the building.

Celine Johnson supports the move.

“And personally, I’m happy not to be associated with that name,” she said.

"It's not a mark of honor, it's a mark of shame," another woman said.

"The Trump name originally stood for a really comfortable place to live, now it stands for political agenda," one man said.

But this is about more than politics – it is about real estate. Melissa Peltie said the prices in the building have plummeted.

“It would be a good time to buy in these buildings, because the prices have been going way down,” Peltie said.  “We get slips under the door, and prices are way down with the name on the building. They’re having trouble turning over apartments.”

The gold letters on the back of the building have also been removed.

Condo owners voted to remove the exterior letters at a cost of $23,000.
