NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — While the work week was been bitterly cold, an unusual “heatwave” is expected to break record temperatures this weekend.

Temperatures are expected to warm Saturday and peak in the mid-60s on Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

If the mercury hits 68 as predicted, that would break the record for the hottest Jan. 12 ever recorded, which was set at 66 degrees in 2017.

According to AccuWeather, the heat is rising in the Tri-State due to a storm being pushed up from the south – which is expected to hit the Mississippi Valley this weekend.

The National Weather Service notes that the normal high for mid-January is around 38 degrees.

The heat should rise steadily and remain in the 60s for Saturday and Sunday, before dropping again at the start of the workweek. On Monday, the high will only be in the high 40s.
