LONG BEACH, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- At the Long Beach Pride Festival Sunday, victims of the Parkland, Florida high school massacre were memorialized.

As WCBS 880’s Mack Rosenberg reported, people got on surfboards and paddled out into the ocean under a cloud-covered sky and a drizzle or two. But they weren’t surfers.

The bands on the participants’ arms would explain their purpose – they are the names of the people killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on Valentine’s Day.

One of those names is Scott Beigel, a hero teacher who lost his life while saving others in the shooting. His mother, Linda Beigel Schulman, was there to watch her son be memorialized.

It was not something that she was happy to be doing, but she spared no emotions in remembering her son Sunday.

“Scott was a hero way before everybody else in the world deemed him a hero. I think everybody knew Scott knew he was special, and he was a hero just in life,” said Beigel Schulman said.

Those who paddled into the water formed a circle and said a prayer before people lining the shore dropped flowers in the sand.
