NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Police say they believe a father killed his wife and children with a knife before taking his own life at their home in Westchester on Thursday afternoon.

Pleasantville Police Chief Erik Grutzner said Friday evening that Chuan-Kai "Tom" Liu, 46, killed his wife Dorothy, 42, and their children Tenneson, 7, and Adaline, 4, before killing himself.

"At this point in the investigation, evidence strongly suggests that Mr. Liu used a knife to cause the deaths of his wife and children and then used that same knife to take his own life," Grutzner said.

A motive is not yet known, but "interviews indicate that Mr. Liu was under a considerable amount of stress," Grutzner said.

There were no prior reports of domestic violence at the home, according to police.

Officers were called to the home just before 2 p.m. Thursday to perform a welfare check. Police had been contacted by the school district after the two kids were absent from school.

Once inside the home on Romar Avenue, officers found the bodies of the husband, wife and two kids, Grutzner said.

“I stand here today representing a community that is reeling under the weight of a tragedy that has occurred,” said Mayor Peter Scherer.

Pleasantville schools superintendent Mary Fox-Alter said schools remained open Friday and counselors will be available for students, parents and staff.

"As you can imagine, our hearts are broken at the news of this incredible tragedy. This is a very small community, and it impacts all of us in this small village," Fox-Alter said.

Neighbor Brian Skarstad told CBS2 that everyone is in shock.

"Especially when it's people you know. In this town, we know everybody. It couldn't be any worse than this," Skarstad said.
