NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The skies were so bright blue at Citi Field Thursday that one could just imagine the crack of the bat and the cheering crowd – until looking down and noticing that the field was covered with snow.

But late-season winter nuisances notwithstanding, opening day is just a week away for the Mets – and WCBS 880’s Mike Smeltz got a preview of what’s new at Citi Field on Thursday.

For some baseball fans, what’s on their plate is just as important as what’s on the field – if not more. Mets Executive Chef Patrick Schaeffer said the team has been bringing in more vendors whose food stands out on social media.

Among them are Lil’ Sweet Chick, a chicken and waffle maker from Brooklyn, and Baked Cheese Haus, a melted cheese shop from off in Milwaukee Brewers territory.

“We’re going to actually be scraping raclette to order on a footlong bratwurst,” Schaeffer said. “They’re from Wisconsin. They’re real cheeseheads.”

That social media and technology tie-in continues in the giveaways. Mets executive director of marketing Mark Fine said new this year is a virtual reality experience included with every bobblehead.

“With Yoenis Cespedes gnome giveaway, when you put your phone up to it, Yoenis could actually sent a message to each of our fans,” Fine said. “It’s making a bobblehead, which is something that doesn’t really move or interact, it’s making it so it does.”
