According to WCBS 880’s Steve Burns, a piece of façade from the building fell and hit 60-year-old Erica Tishman as she was walking on the street below.

"I was coming out the train station going to work and I heard screams," said witness Pablo Blak. He tells Burns that about a dozen peple rushed to help the woman. "I was shocked and scared. Because I walk this route everyday. I don't want nothing to hit me on the top of the head."

Police said Tishman had died by the time they arrived at the scene.

The Department of Buildings in a statement calls this a tragedy, saying no pedestrian should be at risk from dangerous façade conditions.

The building 729 7th Avenue was cited this past April for failure to maintain the building facade. The buildings department says the violation was never resolved.

Engineers are on the scene performing inspections.

The investigation is ongoing.
