Woman Pleads Not Guilty To DWI In Deadly 5-Car Crash On Long Island

LAWRENCE, Long Island, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A woman pleaded not guilty to driving while intoxicated Thursday, in connection with a five-vehicle crash this week that left two people dead on the Nassau Expressway on Long Island.

Zakiyyah Steward, 25, of Brooklyn, is also charged with charged with driving while impaired by a combination of drugs and alcohol and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Another driver -- Rahmel Watkins, 35, of Brooklyn -- was arraigned from his hospital room.

The crash happened around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday on the Nassau Expressway at Burnside Avenue in Inwood, Long Island.

Investigators said at least one vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and another went over a guardrail.

Two people in their early 20s died. Both were passengers trapped inside a car that caught fire in the crash.

In all, seven people were hurt.
