Woodcliff Lake, N.J. On Verge Of Total Ban On Marijuana Sales

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- Prospects for legal recreational marijuana are facing some backlash, as one New Jersey borough looks to head off New Jersey at the pass.

As WCBS 880’s Sean Adams reported, you likely will not find marijuana for sale in Woodcliff Lake if New Jersey does legalize it for recreational use. The borough is on the verge of banning marijuana sales – including medicinal marijuana.

Republican Mayor Carlos Rendo explained why.

“The police is the biggest issue. We don’t have the technology to determine marijuana in your system when you get pulled over by a police officer,” Rendo said. “Colorado has seen an increase in car accidents based on marijuana use.”

Rendo ran for lieutenant governor. He believes the main motivation on behalf of the state for legalizing pot is simply tax revenue.

But he says, at what cost?

“We’ve seen the effects of marijuana on youth and as a gateway drug to other serious drugs like heroin,” Rendo said.

He expects the ordinance to pass.

“Well, it was unanimously introduced by both the Democrats and Republican members of the council,” Rendo said.

A public hearing and a vote on the issue are set for Monday night.
