July 12, 2018 - 3:30 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A construction worker is dead after a beam fell from a building affiliated with Columbia University in Morningside Heights Thursday afternoon.

As WCBS 880’s Mack Rosenberg reported, the incident happened around 2:30 p.m. at the International Students and Scholars office for Columbia, 524 Riverside Dr.

The beam fell on the construction worker’s head, officials said. No students were involved in the incident.

Police said the incident happened in the courtyard of the building. The beam fell several stories before it hit the construction worker in the head, immediately knocking him unconscious.

The worker was taken to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim’s identity had not been released late Thursday afternoon.

A source said the Columbia does not manage the building and was not involved in the work being done there.

The city Department of Buildings was at the scene late Thursday afternoon, trying to determine what led the beam to break off the side of the building and fall.
