In This NYC Neighborhood Every Day Is Small Business Saturday

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Thousands of shoppers nationwide will take place in Small Business Saturday, but in one Bronx neighborhood shopping locally isn’t just an annual event, it happens every day.

The roots of Arthur Avenue in Belmont are anything but buried.

Frank Franz sits on the board of the Belmont Business Improvement District, and he told WCBS 880’s Mack Rosenberg something most people in the area already know: the shops and restaurants here are the heartbeat of the neighborhood.

"Every business here is owned by people who either live in the neighborhood or their family came from this neighborhood, which also creates a special fraternity among everyone, because half the owners here knew each other's parents, grandparents going back from generations,” Franz said.

Those shops include Biancardi Meats, where owner Sal Biancardi says his store is more than just a business.

“This has been my whole life pretty much. The business means an awful lot to my family because of what it's done for my family and what we've been able to do for the community,” Biancardi said.

This is the time of year when small businesses thrive. About 20 to 30 percent of revenue is earned during the holiday season.
