NYC Reports First Pediatric Flu Death Of The Season

October 25, 2018 - 2:04 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Flu activity in the city is low right now but it's already deadly.

"Sadly I want to report that we have one pediatric death so far in the city," Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot announced Thursday.

She would not reveal the child's age, gender or home borough.

Barbot said it's important for anyone older than six months to get a flu shot.

"While pediatric deaths from the flu are not unusual they are sad reminders of the consequences of not getting immunized and the importance of insuring that we bring this message to the public," Barbot said. "Many people still think that they can get sick from the flu shot, the reality is that these are myths. The vaccine will not make you sick, in fact it is very safe."

Five children in the city died of the flu last season.
