NYC’s Largest Pride Flag Unveiled On Roosevelt Island

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – As Pride month rolls on, New York's largest rainbow flag has been unveiled.

The grand staircase leading up to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park have been covered in a rainbow vinyl, making this one of New York’s most visible shows of support for the LGBTQ community during Pride Month.

“It’s fun to have this really big, giant show of support,” Julia Ireland said.

Ireland, who is the great granddaughter of Roosevelt, sits on the park’s board. She says they wanted to do something big for Pride Month.

“We've been hearing that you can see it from Manhattan and Long Island City and on the tram coming in,” she said.

The day-long festival at the park is appropriately named Ascend with Pride.

Visitors might see a tent with a camera. That’s where Video Out is stationed, a chance for people to explain their coming out journey in their own words, according to founder Jordan Reeves.

“Often times when we’re told we’re not good enough or we’re broke, just telling your story the way you want it to be told is empowering,” Reeves said.

The flag will be up through the end of the month.
