NYPD Stepping Up Security For Big 4th Of July Celebration

June 29, 2018 - 4:11 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The Macy's 4th of July extravaganza promises a spectacular display of 75,000 shells and the police department is promising a spectacular display of security.

Two million people are expected along the East River and while there are no specific credible threats, the NYPD is taking no chances.

"We're going to have more than 6,000 uniform and plain clothes uniform officers deployed and more than 100 blocker cars and sand trucks will be placed in and around the viewing area. There will be four different spectator access points located: one at Houston, 23rd, 34th and 42nd Street," said Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison.

Bomb squad, long gun units and dogs that can detect explosives will also be present.

Large coolers, lounge chairs, blankets and umbrellas are prohibited. Backpacks are allowed, but will be screened.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill says enjoy the show, but be aware of your surroundings.

"If you see anything that makes you uncomfortable, I think not only should you, you have a responsibility to call 911 or flag down a police car and let us investigate it," he said.

The commissioner said his favorite part of the 4th of July is when the day is done and everybody is home safely.

And, if you're planning to party, the nypd has a helpful hint: there will be a city-wide DWI crackdown.
