NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – The NYPD is searching for a group of night burglars who not only steal but vandalize the places they target.

The destructive burglars have vandalized at least ten stores in the city since May and gotten away with tens of thousands of dollars in loot, mostly in and around the central Bronx.

Police said the five thieves bang through walls and cut holes in roofs and ceilings.

At a deli on University Avenue in the Bronx, they smashed their way in, destroyed an ATM and tore down shelves. They also stole $9,000 in cash and hundreds of dollars in Newport cigarettes in that heist alone.

Paula Vargas told CBS2 about the damage they did to Aleisha Beauty Salon on W. 238th Street.

“They open one hole and they go inside into the next store, and they break everything in the office,” she said.

Another heist on East 187th Street netted them $15,000 in cash.

The NYPD released images of the five suspects this weekend.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
