NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The NYPD Chief of Department is blasting city tabloids and some of his own officers for spreading a false rumor of a cop-on-cop tryst.

As WCBS 880’s Mike Smeltz reports, the story was like manna from heaven for a tabloid reporter.

Rumors quickly circulated that two NYPD officers from Brooklyn, a female officer and a male sergeant, had an on-duty sexual encounter that was caught on the officer’s department-issued body camera.

The New York Post and Daily News reported multiple police sources back up the rumor.

Though, after an internal affairs investigation, Chief of Department Terence Monahan furiously rebutted the claims, saying there is no evidence to back up the rumor.

“It’s a rumor,” Monahan said. “It started as a rumor and it grew on itself and then it made it into the media, and as the media did it, it exploded. We have absolutely nothing to show that it happened.”

Chief Monahan blamed the tabloids for running the story before the NYPD had time to confirm or deny. He also blamed the police officers who spread the rumor.
