NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Police have arrested a serial Manhattan bank robber, and they say he confessed to robbing six banks while awaiting sentencing for six other robberies last year.

Spencer Heelan was arrested Friday afternoon in connection with a robbery at a TD Bank near Sixth Avenue and West 21st Street in the Flatiron District.

Police say he confessed to that robbery and another five robberies in Manhattan in the past week.

The Daily News reports that Heelan is a heroin addict who was robbing banks to feed his addiction.

A judge had released Heelan as he awaited sentencing for the six Manhattan holdups in August 2018.

“After being arrested... for robbing 6 banks in 2018, Spencer Heelan was back on street to rob 6 more banks in the last week,” tweeted NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

According to the Daily News, he was initially held on $20,000 bail but was ultimately released to enroll in a drug program after pleading guilty. But he never finished the program and was on the run until his arrest Friday.
