NYPD Stepping Up Security For NYC Pride Parade

June 23, 2018 - 4:53 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The NYPD is stepping up security for New York’s 49th annual Pride March.

Nearly 50,000 people are expected to take part in this year’s parade beginning at noon at the corner of 16th St. and 7th Ave and police say they fully prepared to handle the crowd.

In addition to police posted in and out of uniform, the parade will also be taking a different route through the city this year. Police say the march will head south down 7th Ave. and turn east to end up on 5th Ave. going uptown.

The hope is that the new route will provide a better view of the parade while accommodating more people. The change is only one preparation being down ahead of next year’s parade which will happen during the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and the global WorldPride celebration.

Millions of people are expected on the streets of New York but cops are promising a safe and fun parade as usual.
