NYPD Steps Up Security For Celebrate Israel Parade

June 01, 2018 - 2:08 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The NYPD is ready with an enhanced security package for this Sunday's annual Celebrate Israel Parade.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counter Terrorism John Miller said there is no specific or credible threat against the event.

"In fact we have no threat reporting at all," Miller said.

But Miller said the NYPD analyzes the real-world situation.

"So if you look from May to May in Israel, that's 53 terrorist attacks, 11 since March, some heightened tensions in the Gaza Strip and regarding the events such as the moving of the U.S. Embassy, so you factor all of that in," Miller said.

In addition to counter surveillance teams and plainclothes cops in the crowd, there will be bomb squad and heavy weapons personnel.

"We are going to use an array of blocker vehicles, approx. 70. That;s going to be a mix of police cars, but also large sand trucks, depending on the configuration of the intersection," Miller said.

The FBI and NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force will also be part of the security package.

This year's parade celebrates the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Jewish state.
