NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A man who stole nearly a dozen jars of tomato sauce from a grocery store in Queens violently attacked a security guard who tried to stop him, police say.

The NYPD released a surveillance image of the suspect on Saturday. They said he robbed a Food Universe in East Elmhurst of 10 jars of tomato sauce and attempted to run away with the loot.

When a security guard tried to stop him outside the store, he took out a pipe wrench and struck the guard in the arm with it, according to police.

The guard refused medical attention at the scene.

Police said they believe the suspect is in his mid-30s.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
