NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – The NYPD will have a massive presence at this year’s 2020 ball drop in Times Square.

Authorities say security talks for the New Year celebration began after the last piece of confetti fell at the ball drop for 2019.

“This is going to be one of the most well-policed, well-protected celebrations in the entire world, and we’ll have another safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve as we do every year,” said NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea.

The department says it expects thousands more people to turn out for the celebration because of the clear, warmer weather expected on New Year’s Eve.

“We currently have no specific credible threats directed towards any of our events,” Shea said. “Still I'm going to ask that members of the public as always remain vigilant. There are millions of eyes and ears out there that can aid us in keeping New York City safe.”

The NYPD also plans on implementing drone security for the first time since the weather did not permit it in past years.
