MINEOLA, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Residents in six villages in Nassau County were overcharged on their tax bills, according the county executive.

Now, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says she is working to clean up the mess left by the prior administration.

Curran says multiple residents in multiple villages were overcharged, year after year, for sewer disposal.

“The discovery came after a village resident highlighted an apparent disparity in sewer tax rates,” she told reporters.

The villages include Garden City, Roslyn, Mineola, Rockville Centre, Freeport and Hempstead.

According to Curran, the disparity has been happening since 2016. To make up for the overcharges, homeowners will now receive $250 over a five-year period.

While the issue has been mended, Curran notes that her administration has been hit with dozens of similar issues left over from the former administration.

“It makes me very upset. We've been saddled with problem after problem, mistake after mistake, that we now have to fix,” she said.

Former County Executive Ed Mangano was previously convicted of corruption and is set to be sentenced in October.
