NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Opponents of Amazon’s planned Long Island City headquarters remain unapologetic as the city absorbs the news that the company no longer wants to be here.

They claim it’s Amazon who demonstrated a lack of interest in renegotiating a deal the company claims would have brought 25,000 jobs to the city.

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said, “It's strange that Amazon seemed unwilling or unable to negotiate and change the deal."

State Sen. Mike Gianaris, a key member of the opposition to the project under the terms negotiated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, expressed an equal lack of regret.

“We shouldn't just roll out the red carpet for any rich trillionaire that rolls into town,” said Gianaris.

Gianaris was a prime target of Gov. Cuomo, who blasted the state senator for doing tremendous damage to a deal that would have brought thousands of jobs to the city.

“We should be trying to work together, not trying to divide each other, not attack each other,” Gianaris responded, “If we agree on issues, we’ll work together. If we disagree, we’ll be respectful and disagree. That’s how this is supposed to work.”
