Pedestrians, Cyclists Fill Midtown As Summer Streets Returns

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- New York City without cars is almost unimaginable. But it's reality along Park Avenue for the next two Saturdays, as the city's popular Summer Streets program returns.

Alexander Naratoff paused in the middle of his bike ride to tell WCBS 880’s Steve Burns that the lack of cars completely transforms Manhattan.

"We're standing here in the middle of the street. We're not getting honked at or rushed out of here. We're literally standing in the intersection of 40th and Park looking north at Grand Central,” he said. “The streets are gigantic sidewalks.”

Chris Berger was about to take the ride up the car ramp near Grand Central with her son.

“It’s just really great to see him take in streets and enjoying the city a little bit differently than if you’re in a car or on a bus,” she said.

She said it’s freeing, “but unfortunately, we're still not free from people texting while they walk right in front of bikes.”
