NEW YORK (AP) – A domestic violence shelter custom-designed for people and pets has been built in New York City.

Domestic violence survivors, officials, advocates and some pets gathered Tuesday for a ribbon-cutting. Organizers say it's the first shelter of its size custom-built for domestic violence victims to keep their pets in their apartments.

The $20 million, seven-story facility can house up to 100 people. Residents are expected to start arriving in December.

Pet-friendly features include easy-to-clean floors and a grooming room.

A growing number of shelters nationwide have accommodated animals so their owners wouldn't hesitate to leave abusive homes. But such facilities are relatively few.

The new one is being managed by Urban Resource Institute, a shelter operator.
