NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A commercial for Rep. Peter King featuring prominent anti-gang activist Evelyn Rodriguez will begin airing Monday, after her family gave permission to run the ad filmed before her death on Sept. 14.

Rodriguez, 50, was killed in Brentwood after she was struck by a SUV following a dispute over the placement of a memorial for her daughter Kayla Cuevas, a 15-year-old who was reportedly killed by MS-13 gang members in 2016.

“Whether she was dealing with people in a local community meeting who were angry, or sitting in the Oval Office with the President of the United States, Evelyn was always focused on one thing: crushing MS-13,” King said of the activist.

After Rodriguez death, King said he would be pulling the commercial. However, he later decided to run the advertisement after receiving a blessing from her family.

The commercial was altered slightly with a new introduction that reads, “Evelyn Rodriguez' family wanted you to hear her one more time.”

King eulogized Rodriguez at her funeral and told WCBS 880 that she was a remarkable person.

“She could have easily panicked after her daughter was killed, she could have blamed the whole world – she had every right to – instead she just decided to make sure that no other parent would have to go through what she went through,” King said.
