NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A pit bull mauled a 7-year-old girl on a Manhattan street Thursday, with witnesses describing the dog dragging the girl around by her head in a horrific scene.

CBS2 reports that the girl was with her mother near 79th Street and Broadway around 4 p.m. when she went over to a homeless woman with a pit bull to give her a $1 bill.

When the girl was giving the woman the bill, the dog jumped up and grabbed her by the face and started pulling her around.

“That little girl is flopping around. I mean, it was awful,” Thomas Nardini told CBS2, adding that bystanders struggled to get the dog off the girl.

“By the time I got there, they were managing to separate them. The woman, everybody by this point is jumping in, trying to, you know, shrieking and carrying on. It’s the worst, the worst of the worst,” Nardini said.

Responding officers rushed the girl to a hospital. She is expected to be OK but will probably need cosmetic surgery.

Animal control is testing the dog for rabies. The owner was questioned but isn’t expected to face charges.
