MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. (WCBS 880) – Five people are dead after a series of overnight car crashes in Suffolk County, including one that police say involved a stolen SUV driven by a teenager who fled officers.

The first crash involved a Nissan Rogue that was reportedly stolen a few days ago.

Police say officers spotted the Rogue running a stop sign in Yaphank, sparking a pursuit that ended with a violent head-on crash.

The Nissan slammed into an SUV on Route 25 in Middle Island just as the SUV was entering an apartment complex, police say.

A couple in the SUV – a 74-year-old man and 71-year-old woman – was killed, according to police.

A 16-year-old passenger in the Nissan also died.

The driver of the stolen Rogue survived the crash, according to police, who identified the driver as 17-year-old Nahriek Belford. He was charged with reckless endangerment.

About two miles down the road in Coram a car crashed through a telephone pole on Homestead Drive around 4 a.m., police say. One person was killed in that crash.

And in Shirley around 1 a.m., a Jeep caught fire after being rear-ended. The driver of the Jeep was also killed.
