GREAT NECK, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Police on Long Island are looking for more suspects after an elderly couple lost nearly $30,000 in a telephone scam.

According to WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall, a 76-year old Great Neck woman answered her phone one day and heard that her son was in an accident in Florida.

The person on the other end of the line then claimed her son needed thousands of dollars to avoid legal trouble. But, it was all part of a scam.

“I talk all the time to my son. I believed it was my son, but it wasn't,” the woman said.

The 76-year-old said she was afraid her son, who works in law enforcement, would lose his job, so she handed over $29,000 dollars to a man who showed up to her house.

The conman then claimed he needed more money and so she eventually handed over another $12,000.

This is when the woman became suspicious and called her son, just to find out it was all a lie.

“My son answered the phone and said mom, what happened? I said, are you okay? I said ‘I can't get in touch with a lawyer,’” she explained.

Her son questioned what he meant and told her to immediately call the police.

When the suspects, Lissette Rodriguez and Rigo Jose Batista Dominguez, showed up to collect more money, they were arrested.

Authorities now believe the suspects may have been working with others to conduct the scam.
