NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A 4-year-old boy died after he was thrown from his family’s Midwood apartment building by his older brother, police say.

Shimron Smith was found dead in the courtyard of the building on Nostrand Avenue sometime after 3:30 a.m.

A neighbor who identified herself as Patricia said two detectives knocked on her door and asked her if her children were safe. Then she learned what happened.

“As a parent, it’s heartbreaking,” she said.

The boy’s 20-year-old brother, Shawn J. Smith, was later arrested and charged with second degree murder.

It’s unclear what led to the tragic death, but neighbors told WCBS 880’s Steve Burns that the older brother was known to have mental health problems.

Gloria Melvin lives a block away. She said the news has disturbed the entire community.

“The 4-year-old didn’t even have a chance,” she said.
