Police Hunt Man Accused Of Scamming Elderly Out Of Thousands

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Police are offering $10,000 to help catch a man accused of scamming the elderly out of tens of thousands of dollars.

The unknown man allegedly preys on the elderly, including an 81-year-old woman whom he took $45,000 from, by telling them their loved ones have been arrested.

He then demands they hand over thousands of dollars to help bail their loved ones out of prison, and he does this all in person

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said he may be selecting targets through social media.

“Look Facebook is a great tool, it's great to share things. But when you go on Facebook and you say, ‘here’s mom’s 81st birthday’ and then you turn around and everybody in the family is listed in the photo,” Ryder said. “You're educating that bad guy to go out now and to scam you. So you got to be careful what you put out on that social media.”

There is surveillance video of the suspect and authorities said he drives a black Ford sedan with livery license plates.

Five victims have come forward so far, but police think there could be more.

“These are very proud people in our community, right. They grow up, they live good lives and now they’re being scammed and taken advantage of,” Ryder said.

Detectives are asking for anyone with information about this crime to contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
