Police Release Sketch Of Suspect Sought In Attempted Kidnapping In Mineola

MINEOLA, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Two men who allegedly tried to abduct two 8-year-old girls who were playing in a backyard on Long Island this week remain on the loose.

Police have now released a sketch of one of the suspects.

It was just before 5 p.m. Tuesday when Nassau County police said the two men suddenly showed up as the girls played in the gated backyard of a home on Maple Place in Mineola.

The men asked the girls their names and if they wanted to come for a ride, police said. They then chased the girls around the yard, police said.

“One girl was pushed down to the ground by one of the subjects. She was struck two times in the face, causing her minor pain. The other girl was able to proceed through the backyard to the back door, and told her mother exactly what was going on,” said Nassau County police Lt. Richard Lebrun. “911 was called at that point, and police responded to the residence.”

Meanwhile, the girl who was attacked kicked and screamed, causing both men to run off. One escaped on foot and the other drove off in a dark-colored vehicle.

Lebrun said the men are still on the loose. No other such incident was reported in the area, and he said the girls’ story is very credible.

Police said both suspects had beards and were wearing yellow pants and blue shirts -- possibly uniforms.

Detectives request anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.  All callers will remain anonymous.
