Trump’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ Meme Stirs Up Twitter

WASHINGTON (WCBS 880/AP) -- President Donald Trump on Friday warned of the upcoming sanctions his administration would soon impose on Iran by using a reference to the popular HBO series “Game of Thrones.”

In the presidential tweet, Trump shared a photo of himself with text reading “Sanctions are Coming” – in the same font used by the HBO show – and the date November 5.

The phrase echoed a common tagline used by the series, “Winter is Coming,” to describe a long and cold season with no clear end date.

The date refers to the first day in when the sanction against Iran will come into effect.

It's the second batch of penalties that the administration has reimposed since Trump, a former reality TV star, withdrew from the landmark deal in May.

On Twitter, the tweet stirred up a variety of criticism and support. HBO also responded negatively to the movie poster-like announcement, according to a CNBC report.

“We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes,” HBO said of the tweet.
