Police Swarm Queens Neighborhood After Prop Mistaken For Dead Baby

June 18, 2019 - 2:44 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Police and other responders descended on a Queens neighborhood after a runner discovered what was believed to be a dead baby in a grassy area outside a park on Tuesday morning.

Police initially reported the body of a 3-month-old baby had been discovered near Crocheron Park in Bayside.

EMS pronounced the "baby" dead and it was covered with a yellow tarp.

Authorities later determined it was actually a realistic prop or doll made to look like a decomposing infant. It was wearing a diaper and was covered in what appeared to be bruises.

CBS2 reports the lifelike prop, which was complete with coagulated blood, initially fooled EMS and crime scene officers. Police set up a crime scene tent and evidence markers were placed around the area.

Police are now trying to determine where the prop came from and whether this was some sort of prank.

They are reviewing surveillance video from the area.
