(KMOX) - A few things you probably make sure you have with you when you leave to go to the grocery store or out in public might include a face mask, hand sanitizer, gloves and disinfectant wipes. Well you may have to add goggles to that list soon, according to national medical expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci.

The White House Coronavirus Task Force member suggested Wednesday that Americans should consider wearing goggles – or at least a face shield – "if you really want to be complete" in protecting yourself from COVID.

He noted they are not "universally recommended" at this point, but there are some things goggles or a shield can protect you from that a mask cannot.

"You have mucosa in the nose, mucosa in the mouth, but you also have mucosa in the eye," he said. "Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces. So if you have goggles or an eye shield you should use it."

Currently, the U.S. is the worst-affected country, with more than 4.3 million diagnosed cases and over 150,000 deaths.

The nation's top infectious disease specialist also told ABC News that people definitely need to get the flu vaccine this fall because it's going to get very tricky with COVID-19 and the flu having such similar symptoms.

The second surge of confirmed cases appears to be leveling off, according to the Associated Press. Based on a seven-day rolling average, daily cases of the coronavirus in the U.S. fell from 67,317 on July 22 to 65,266 on Wednesday, according to data kept by Johns Hopkins University. That is a decline of about 3%.

The slight decrease is happening in hard-hit places like Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, but cases are still rising in more than half of all U.S. states. The AP reports, the outbreak’s center of gravity seems to be shifting toward the Midwest.
