Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is soon introducing face mask vending machines in an attempt to encourage the safety of riders who use the system.

“If you’re in the BART system, it’s a given that you have to have your face mask on,” says BART General Manager Bob Powers. All riders are required to wear masks on trains and platforms.

“We want to be able to put some vending machines in stations just in case you forgot your mask at home,” says BART spokesperson Alicia Trost. The agency is working to procure face mask vending machines. The machines have been spotted in parts of Asia and Europe and at the Las Vegas and Denver airports.

“We also want people to know we have extra masks at the downtown San Francisco stations at the agent booths. And the every (BART) police officer has five extra masks that they can provide,” Trost says.

She added: “Really, we are thinking long term now. That’s where the vending machines come up. We may not always be able to hand out free masks so let's make sure we have something at the station that’s affordable.”

BART officials say the mask requirement will likely be in effect for a long time, and they are working with other transit agencies to ensure that rules are consistent for riders.
