Macy's announced on Monday that it will furlough 130,000 employees -- the majority of its workforce -- as its stores remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Wall Street Journal was first to report the story.

The retailer told its staff it would continue to pay health benefits and cover 100 percent of premiums at least through May.

Some staff will remain on to support ecommerce, distribution and call centers.

All of Macy’s stores have been closed since March 18.

At the time, chairman and CEO Jeff Gennette said in a statement, "The health and safety of our customers, colleagues and communities is our utmost priority. As a result of the recent COVID-19 developments, we have decided to temporarily close our stores. We will work with government and health officials to assess when we will reopen our stores and safely bring our colleagues back to work."
