Recent Poll Shows NJ Residents Ready For Legal Weed

TRENTON, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- The support to legalize recreational marijuana in New Jersey spans across generations and political lines, according to the results of a new poll.

The poll reveals 58 percent of New Jersey residents say that they're ready for legal weed.

The director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers, Ashley Koning, says the social justice advantages of legalizing pot are important to people.

"Lesser penalties and expungement from records and really clearing those who have been arrested for marijuana usage," Koning said.

Even with a Democratic-controlled Legislature, seven in ten Republicans are ready as well.

Another reason she believes people support legalization is due to money.

"What they hate most is taxes. It's a perennial concern," Koning says. "So if this at all kind of assuages or helps the tax situation in New Jersey, New Jerseyans are certainly for that."

However, polls show that the public seems more divided on how it would impact their community and if there should be public areas for lighting up.
