Red Cross Rushes To Help Victims Of Hurricane Michael

October 11, 2018 - 7:50 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The full extent of damage from Hurricane Michael is still unclear, but already, aid groups have rushed to help the victims.

As WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported, the goal is to provide help as quickly as possible – but not at any cost. Josh Lockwood is the head of the Red Cross in New York.

"What we'll be looking for over the next couple of days first of all is being given the OK by authorities about certain areas that are safe to go into. We do not put our workforce at risk," Lockwood said.

There are 800 staffers and volunteers who have already been sent to the storm zone, and one is from New York.

"Those people are providing, will be providing shelter for people who have evacuated,” Lockwood said. “We will be providing meals and snacks and delivering relief supplies."

If you want to help, Lockwood said the Red Cross can always use donations.
