Watchdog Group: Cuomo Is ‘Biggest Single Problem’ With MTA

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A new watchdog report says the MTA operates more like the CIA and if the troubled agency wants to win back public trust, operational procedures need to change.

The 170-page report on the MTA from the watchdog group Reinvent Albany says, “Governor Cuomo is the biggest single problem with the governance of the MTA.”

“The governor controls the MTA there should not be doubt on that,” said Rachael Fauss, the senior research analyst with Reinvent Albany.

She adds that the MTA Board of Directors needs to be given more power and Gov. Andrew Cuomo needs to rescind some control because, as of now, the board’s intended purpose of providing oversight on major projects is not happening.

“We saw with the L train that its role with minimized extremely effectively by the governor, in where it basically had very little roll in the change of plans that occurred. That example is illustrative of the governor’s remarkable influence over the MTA,” she said.

Overall, Reinvent Albany’s MTA report issues 50 recommendations to fix the transit agency.

A spokesperson for Gov. Cuomo calls the report “yesterday’s news” and said Cuomo has stepped in to help major projects when no one else would touch them.
