NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a return to New York as she tries to make the case for some of her headline-grabbing proposals.

She’s pervasive, polarizing and the biggest name in Washington. With more than 2.5 million followers on Twitter, she has a large platform.

Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC as she’s become known, represents just a sliver of Queens and the Bronx, but her influence spreads far beyond those boundaries, especially now as she elucidates some of her policy proposals, like a 70 percent marginal tax rate.

“At what point do we return to this question that King asked, that Gandhi asked – Is our material technology outpacing our moral technology?” she said at an event commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. at Riverside Church on Monday.

When asked by writer Ta-Nehisi Coates at the event if a society producing billionaires is a moral one, she said: “No, it’s not.”

She likened the conversation to what’s happening with Amazon in Queens.

“Are we comfortable with a society where someone can have a personal helipad while this city is experiencing the highest rates of people experiencing homelessness since the Great Depression?” she told Coates.

She calls Amazon a “digital Wal-Mart” and says activists could still stop its move to Long Island City if they make their voices heard.
