NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Police arrested a notorious sex offender Friday after he was accused of groping another victim on a Manhattan subway.

Authorities say 67-year-old Gian Verdelli has been arrested for sexual abuse dozens of times.

“He was released on May 1, he’s been on parole for the same thing, sexual abuse,” said Manhattan Chief of Detectives William Aubry. “He's a level two sex offender.”

Verdelli’s most recent arrest comes after her alleged grouped a straphanger on an L train Wednesday. The 37-year-old victim in the incident says he placed his hands under her dress and tried to rub her genitals.

The victim, an off-duty traffic agent, followed Verdelli off the train as he attempted to flee and took a photo of him to send to police.

“I want to commend the victim for coming forward, taking these photos, and coming forward and reporting it,” said Aubry. “I would say to any other victims out there: take a close look at this individual and please report if you were a victim of a crime. If he inappropriately touched you or you feel did something, came close to you, we want to know.”

When the victim filed the complaint, officers say they recognized Verdelli right away. He has 169 prior arrests, according to a Daily News report.

Police Commissioner James O’Neill pointed to the case as another reason to bar repeat sexual offenders from the city’s transit network.
