Report: Pilots Voiced Safety Concerns Before East River Helicopter Crash

April 07, 2018 - 4:27 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The pilot of the helicopter that capsized into the East River warned of safety issues months before the deadly crash.

The New York Times obtained internal documents that show several pilots for the company that operated the flight said conditions were dangerous.

One wrote an email to management that said "We are setting ourselves up for failure' by using sometimes poorly fitting harnesses.

The same pilot made a series of recommendations -- including one four days before the accident -- for new tools that would allow passengers to more easily free themselves in case of an emergency.

FlyNYON executives in those emails insisted the flights were safe.

The NTSb is still investigating the crash.
