July 15, 2018 - 3:12 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A city correction officer was slashed in the face by a prisoner during a gang fight at Rikers Island Friday.

The officer reportedly tried to defuse the situation. Video shows the officer using a can of pepper spray on the inmates and then is seen staggering away, holding the left side of his face.

Elijah Moody was charged with the attack. He is being held at Rikers without bail on 2016 murder and assault charges.

Despite Friday’s attack, violence in city jails has seen a downward trend in recent years, according to the Correction Department.

The total number of slashings and stabbings from January to May 2018 was down 42 percent compare to the same time last year.
