NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The iconic Barbie doll is getting a new career: robotics engineering.

The new doll comes with safety goggles, a robot and a laptop that’s crowded with coding windows. It was inspired the nonprofit organization Black Girls Code that focuses on providing technology education for African-American girls.

“Black Girls Code is breaking barriers and pushing down walls to really empower our girls and let them know that they can be here,” spokesperson Amber Moore said. “There is a place for them. They have the skillset and they can grow, build and create.”

As CBS News’ Deborah Rodriguez reported, Barbie’s career change hopes to inspire young girls to become interested in science and technology.

Currently, women hold just 24 percent of S.T.E.M. jobs in the United States and Mattel hopes Barbie can encourage a new generation of females to get involved.
