Rockland County Officials Denounce Anti-Vaxxer Forum

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) Anti-vaxxers were on the offensive in Monsey.

Hundreds of people from the Orthodox Jewish community that is ground zero in the measles outbreak listened to speakers rail against vaccines at a forum Monday night.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day calls it all propaganda and denounced the anit-vaxxer symposium.

“This is a national movement of people who are nothing but charlatans, conspiracy theorists and people are spreading this information,” Day said, “The reality is that pretty much any body would tell you we're bussed in from other areas, local attendance was next to nothing. They have been rightly condemned by every Jewish organization here in Rockland County.”

Local rabbis condemned the anti-vaxxer message from Brooklyn Rabbi Hillel "William" Handler who alleges New York City Mayor De Blasio is targeting the Orthodox community to detract attention from diseases brought here by Central American immigrants.

"The local rabbis are on record saying that this guy is at best somewhat strange we'll say," Day said. "To say the Gods of vaccine are engaging in child sacrifice? I mean this is wacky."

Via Skype, the group also heard from Andrew Wakefield, who has been barred from practicing medicine in Britain.

Medical journals call him a fraud for alleging vaccines cause autism.

County executive and local rabbis call all of this dangerous misinformation that must be denounced.

More than 20,000 people in Rockland County have been vaccinated.
