NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — One prominent politician has been caught in the crossfire over Ruben Diaz Sr.’s homophobic comments and the subsequent calls for his resignation: his son, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

Diaz Jr. says that this is a difficult time for him as a son, but he says he disagrees with his father and has asked him to apologize.

“I love him,” Diaz said, “But I think he’s wrong.”

Ruben Diaz Sr. made a comment a week ago on a Spanish-language show that the homosexual community controls the City Council.

Ignoring calls for him to apologize, Diaz Sr. has instead doubled down, citing the disintegration of the Amazon deal as evidence of his statements, since two of the most prominent councilmembers in opposition to the plan, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Jimmy Van Bramer, are both gay.

While others have called for his resignation, Diaz Jr. believes that decision is in his father’s hands.

“That’s not for me,” Diaz Jr. said, “That’s for him to say.”
